Current position: Junior research fellow, Department of Economics of the University of Trento and INGENIO [CSIC-UPV]

Professional and Research Experience: Francesco holds a PhD in law and economics from the University of Bologna. He has participated in various national and international research projects and has been awarded several grants and scholarships from various institutions, including University of Bologna (2004), Autonomous Province of Trento (2007), and European commission (2010). He visited several internationally recognised research centres: the Manchester Institute of Innovation Research (MIIR) of the University of Manchester (UK) and the UNU-MERIT research centre in Maastricht (NL).

Fields of expertise and research interests: his research interests lie predominately in the area of economics of innovation and new technologies, particularly with respect to intellectual property rights in high-tech industries (software and hardware industries) and in science (academic patenting and knowledge/technology transfer). Moreover, he is also interested in the development of new research methodologies for the measurement of innovation output. The bulk of his research activity has been conducted on an empirical basis through the use of patent data, survey methodologies and advanced econometric methods (among the others, non-linear panel data method and causality models). Besides standard empirical techniques, he has been investing time and effort in other less traditional approaches from both a theoretical (simulation analysis and fuzzy logic systems) and empirical (survey research, case study and Delphy method) points of view. Furthermore, he has recently refined his competences in theoretical modelling, especially in the field of non-linear dynamic systems applied to diffusion models and network analysis.
