International Mobility and Publication Dynamics: some analyses on China and Argentina

This presentation highlights some of the findings from projects studying how international scientific mobility affects dynamics of life science research in China and Argentina. The main focus lies on bibliometric studies of the relationship between mobility, international collaboration as well as career progression (in the case of Argentina). These studies show some of the effects of the scientific social capital which researchers build up during foreign work experience. For the Chinese case, the presentation will also discuss how mobility is related to some broader bibliometric trends.
 

About Koen Jonkers

Koen Jonkers holds an MSc in biotechnology and social science masters from universities in NL and the UK. He defended his PhD at the Social and Political Science department of the European University Institute in Florence, Italy.

The topic of his PhD was a study of the effect of the return migration of Chinese scientists on the transformation and internationalisation of the Chinese research system. It formed the basis for an academic monograph, several articles and contributions to edited volumes (2008a, 2009a, 2009b, 2010a, 2010b, 2011a). After defending his PhD, he took part in the EU funded MIREM project at the Robert Schuman Centre for Advanced Studies (2008b).

At the CSIC Institute of Public Goods and Policies he first worked as a JAE-DOC (2008-2010) and currently as a Ramon y Cajal fellow. In this period he continued studying relationship between scientific mobility and international research collaboration in China and Argentina. Another study on the internationalization of public sector research was published last October (2010d). He was also involved in several other projects including the editing of the ISSC/UNESCO World Social Science Report (2010f, 2010g, 2010h) and an EU funded project on competitiveness challenges in relation to immigration (2011b).

Another of his research lines focuses on the dynamics of life science research. He recently published a study on this topic (2010e) and has started a larger project studying dynamics in life science research in Europe.
