In contemporary science, almost all research is collaborative and the vast majority of research papers are co-authored. But surprisingly little is known about the motives, processes and effects of collaboration.  The presentation gives a retrospective of Professor Bozeman and his colleagues research on collaboration, examining who collaborates and with whom, strategies used by collaborators, effects of collaboration on measured research productivity, collaborations between university and industry-based researchers and on recently published work on differences between collaboration patterns of men and women researchers.
