This seminar provides a case study of the conduct of contract research at the European level linked to a rapidly evolving policy landscape. It discusses three aspects of social science work in partnership with a consortia of health and medical experts and organizations. First, it describes the conduct of a Work Package on the organization of diagnosis, treatment and care for Rare Disease patients in the context of the Member State policy collaboration and the European cross-border healthcare initiative. Second, it describes the results from the project and the ways in which these results can be packaged and delivered for the needs of the contracting partner. Third, an initial approach to converting the knowledge developed in the course of the contract study into academic outputs, particularly journal articles is presented. This preliminary attempt to integrate specific project findings into more general scholarly theory and empirical literature is also an invitation for critique and the opening up of potential alternative paths to publication.
