By exploring the relationship between educational attainments, expressed competences, satisfaction and earnings of Italian and Spanish employees, the research programme contributes to the ongoing debate on the return to public investments in education and their impact on economic growth. The availability of new information about the distribution and the determinants of skill mismatch and educational mismatch will support the development of focused policy measures in two countries where, due to their structural and historical peculiarities, the availability of human capital in support of innovation and growth processes plays a crucial role to limit the competition from newly industrialised countries.
