Abstract: I will explore how emerging artificial intelligence systems reproduce hegemonic knowledge and technological dependency when used as tools for innovation in the Global South. I will draw a historical link between the history of ‘Siliconisation’ and the current drive toward AI-driven science and innovation. Applying the lens of epistemic injustice, I look at how visions to automate knowledge work replicate and reinforce historic patterns of knowledge exclusion, cultural homogenisation, and data colonialism. In doing so, I critique the use of AI in science as a vehicle for epistemic subordination of the Global South and call for a careful approach to AI that centres the values, knowledge, cosmologies, and languages of communities in the peripheries of mainstream AI production.
