Researchers Adela García, from INGENIO (CSIC-UPV), and Rosa Isusi, head of UTRANSFER, an Associated Unit of INGENIO (CSIC-UPV), participated in the event New Social Emergencies in Cities: Vulnerability, Resilience and Community Response, organised by SAMUR Social in Madrid. During the event, Adela García presented the work of GADE-CSIC and its Social Risks Group in emergency situations such as the floods caused by the DANA storm in Valencia, while Rosa Isusi took part in a roundtable discussion on climate emergencies and social vulnerability.
The event brought together professionals and experts to discuss emerging challenges related to social emergencies in urban environments and strategies to improve responses to them. Adela García delivered the opening presentation, entitled Social Emergencies in the 21st Century: New Risks for Cities and New Response Models. During her presentation, she introduced the work of the CSIC’s Disaster and Emergency Advisory Group (GADE), focusing on the activities carried out by its Social Risks Group.
Among the cases presented, she highlighted the response to the DANA floods in Valencia, participation in a volcanic emergency simulation exercise in Garachico (Tenerife), and the participatory workshops (living labs) held in Las Médulas, in collaboration with the Las Médulas Foundation, to help develop the site’s Comprehensive Management Plan.
The event also featured Rosa Isusi, head of UTRANSFER, an Associated Unit of INGENIO (CSIC-UPV), who participated in the roundtable discussion Climate Emergencies and Social Vulnerability, which explored the relationship between climate change-related risks and situations of social vulnerability.
