ABSTRACT

Abstract

Academic careers generate both psychological and scientific outcomes, but it remains unclear whether they share the same antecedents. We distinguish between a psychological sustainability logic, centred on individual characteristics associated with researchers’ distress, and a scientific production logic, centred on career and structural conditions associated with publication activity and citation impact. Using longitudinal survey and bibliometric data from Spanish researchers, we compare antecedents of psychological distress in 2022, publication activity in 2020, overall citation impact, and membership in the top 10% of citation impact among those who published that year. Results reveal limited overlap across outcomes. Psychological distress is strongly associated with personality, with substantial heterogeneity across anxiety and insomnia, social dysfunction, and severe depression. Publication activity is more closely related to prior citation impact, scientific field, seniority, project participation, and organisational characteristics, although emotional stability is also positively associated with publication activity. Overall citation impact shows little association with personality, whereas openness is positively associated with membership in the top 10% of citation impact. Pairwise associations are weak, particularly between distress and scientific outcomes. These findings suggest that academic careers reflect partially distinct psychological-sustainability and scientific-production logics, while also indicating that different personality traits may relate to different dimensions of scientific performance.

Bio

Joaquín M. Azagra-Caro is a Scientific Researcher in Interdisciplinary Social Sciences at INGENIO (CSIC– Universitat Politècnica de València). His work focuses on Science, Technology and Innovation Studies, with particular expertise in university–industry relations, knowledge transfer, and research and innovation policy. He has contributed to understanding how scientific knowledge translates into societal value, especially through science–society interactions and broader engagement with public and cultural stakeholders. His recent work explores science communication, art–science interactions, and researcher well-being.
