Álvaro Fernández-Baldor és professor permanent al Departament de Projectes d'Enginyeria de la UPV. Posseïx un perfil interdisciplinari, perquè va estudiar enginyeria tècnica industrial (Univ. de Cantàbria), enginyeria en automàtica (Univ. del País Basc), màster en desenrotllament rural (Univ. Federal do Rio Gran do Sul, el Brasil) i doctorat en economia agroalimentària i medi ambient (UPV).

La seua docència se centra en el Màster O. en Cooperació al Desenvolupament, on és actualment el director i coordina el grup d'innovació educativa EICE-MACODE. També participa en els postgraus d'Innovació per a la Transformació Social i Ambiental que organitza Enginy, coordinant el mòdul del sistema soci-tècnic digital.

A nivell d'investigació, li interessen les trasicions justes, els processos de desenvolupament, les metodologies participatives, la innovació social de base i, en general, l'impacte social que pot generar la tecnologia. De fet, la seua tesi doctoral es va centrar en analitzar l'impacte social de projectes d'electrificació rural amb energies renovables als Andes mitjançant el paradigma de desenrotllament humà i l'enfocament de capacitats.
