FULLY FUNDED PHD POSITION IN
SCIENCE, TECHNOLOGY AND INNOVATION STUDIES
We are offering a fully funded 4-year PhD scholarship as part of the research project: ‘Health crisis and academic engagement with society (HECAES)’, funded by the Spanish Ministry of Science and Innovation. The primary focus of HECAES is to increase understanding about the links between a health crisis and academic engagement. The ultimate goal of this scholarship is to support the successful completion of a PhD thesis aligned with the project's objectives.
The PhD scholarship represents a unique opportunity to pursue a PhD in a fast-growing research area in the field of Science, Technology and Innovation Studies. The project is led by Joaquín M. Azagra-Caro and David Barberá-Tomás (INGENIO, CSIC-UPV, Spain) and includes several partners from prestigious institutions such as David A. Kirby (Cal Poly University – San Luis Obispo, US), Jordi Molas-Gallart (INGENIO, CSIC-UPV, Spain), Julia Osca-Lluch (INGENIO, CSIC-UPV, Spain), Elena M. Tur (Eindhoven University of Technology), Ana Tur-Porcar (University of Valencia, Spain), África Villanueva-Félez (ESIC Business & Marketing School, Spain) or Alfredo Yegros-Yegros (CWTS, Leiden University, The Netherlands).
The selected candidate will become an integral part of the project team and will receive hands-on training in several methodologies. The position also offers the opportunity to enrol in a doctoral program, undertake one or several research visits to prestigious international institutions, and participate in most activities associated with the research project.
Profile & Eligibility
Applicants must meet the prerequisites for enrolment in a doctoral program in Spain. This includes holding an official undergraduate degree, and a masters’ degree. Qualified applicants should possess a background in science fields such as Management, Economics, Scientometrics, Psychology, Science Communication, Cultural Studies, Film Studies or similar areas. Applicants from other fields (e.g. Medicine) may also be considered if their masters’ degree aligns with the aforementioned science fields.
Proficiency in both written and spoken English is mandatory, and at least an intermediate level of Spanish is desirable. Prior involvement in research projects or programs related to the aforementioned science fields will be advantageous. Candidates with an international background, such as academic stays abroad, foreign degrees, or international dual degrees, will be given strong consideration.
Given that the research project involves a combination of qualitative and quantitative approaches, expertise in interviews, surveys, participatory research, film content analysis, scientometrics, and regression analysis will be highly regarded. Familiarity with statistical packages used in data analysis (e.g. Stata, Python) or qualitative research tools (e.g. NVivo) will also be appreciated.
Applicants should hold either European nationality or non-European nationality with a valid EU permit.
The yearly salary is around 21,000 € (gross). If the candidate completes the PhD dissertation in less than four years, the contract is converted to a post-doc contract. The project also offers funding for research stays at foreign universities, training and attendance to conferences and workshops.
Location
The awarded candidate will be affiliated with INGENIO (CSIC-UPV), a joint research institute of the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC) and the Polytechnic University of Valencia (UPV). It is located on the main UPV campus, so PhD students have access to all facilities provided by the University: libraries, databases, e-Reviews, among others. We also offer access to a full range of student services including on-campus medical service, student office, and accommodation and sports facilities.
The city of Valencia is frequently hailed as one of the world's best cities to live and study in. It excels in terms of quality of life, healthcare, public transportation, favourable climate, and a relatively affordable cost of living compared to other European cities.
